Starting Up

Certificate of Completion

The dream team has many different skills and, ideally, all team members can quickly upgrade their skills as needed [...] Another feature that unites startups is constant pressure. A startup is really not just about partying and having fun.

I always believe there will be “that time” when I cannot evade myself learning business. It has been gradually proving that it’s time to force myself to study and read more about business-related topics since my internship as a UX designer in an educational and tech startup. Working in a startup required me to act fast and precisely based on user’s needs and test, test, and test. Honestly, I was not really a beginner in UX design at that time, but not really a junior as well. The startup was the best environment for me to experience, learn, develop and improve something that the market needs. Some of my friends thought my internship was merely designing some eye candy UI for application, but the story was not like that. I met myself when reading Chapter 6: Building a team, here said.

Fortunately, my background is diverse enough to be able to harmonize with the developers and designers. However, a startup needs to keep growing so I had to move on to new phases of work, doing tasks that I had not ever done, for example, created ad promo videos, ad campaigns, and learning materials. I was so lucky to have with me many talented people who did support me a lot. A lesson I learned from my family’s culture is I always keep myself a “can-do” attitude. At the end of my internship, I started to dig a lot deeper into gamification, how to get users into the funnel, and help my CEO in preparing his pitching. It was at that moment, I knew I had to study business seriously.

My learning path will not stop here, this course is provided by Aalto Venture Program for free and easy to access but the quality is indisputably outstanding and lesson volume is very competent indeed. From my perspective, there are many similarities between doing UX research and the journey of making your entrepreneurial idea come true. I absolutely recommend this course for anyone who is interested in these fields.
